"She is transforming the definition of supermodel"
Brazilian super model Gisele Bündchen was spotted, aged 13, by an Elite casting agent in 1993, while eating a burger at a Sao Paolo shopping mall. She was runner-up for the Brazilian Finals for the Elite Model Look 1993, and participated In the Elite Model Look World final in 1994, finishing in the top 15. In 1996 she debuted at New York Fashion Week; in 1998 she got her first major international break when fashion designer Alexander MacQueen cast her in a show and described her to the press as ‘The Body’. By 1999 Gisele was the IT girl of the international modelling scene; her Germanic blue eyes, angular cheek bones and athletic build combined with the healthy tan and feminine curves of a Brazilian bombshell put an end to the androgynous era of so-called ‘heroin chic’.
Today Gisele has appeared on over 500 magazine covers – second only to Lady Diana – including Vogue titles in Brazil, US, France and China, Harpers Bazaar, The Face, i-D Magazine, Rolling Stone and Vanity Fair and has represented top fashion houses including Christian Dior, Mark Jacobs, Valentino, Michael Kors. She has led numerous campaigns for glamour fashion house Dolce & Gabbana who said of Gisele: “We love her attitude. She’s self-confident, conscious of her beauty, independent. She is what a woman should be.”
By 2000 Gisele had signed a $25 million contract with Victoria’s Secret. In 2007 she topped the Forbes list for The Top Earning Models in the World, with $33 million combined income for campaigns, contracts, licensing agreements and real estate assets; an amount that rose to an estimated $45 million in 2011, prompting Forbes to suggest that Gisele could be on her way to becoming the world’s first billionaire super model.
With maturity Gisele has used her profile to promote humanitarian causes including campaigns for HIV/Aids, the Amazon Rainforest, breast cancer and disaster relief including the recent tsunami in Japan. In 2009 she was named a UN Goodwill Ambassador for the Environment.
Now married with a young son, Gisele possesses a unique combination of beauty, intelligence, professionalism, humanitarianism and business savvy.
